The Great Resignation and an Inclusive Mindset

Jan 30, 2022

In September 2021, 4.4 million people quit their jobs in the United States, a record-breaking 3% of the workforce.  The so-called Great Resignation is real, and among CEOs, talent retention is at the top of their list of concerns.

If someone doesn’t feel a sense of belonging, doesn’t feel like they could be their authentic self, and doesn’t find meaning in their work, then they would move on to an organization that provides that environment.

Are there employees who are on the fence about leaving your company now and feeling a similar disconnect?  If you are a C-Suite, an executive or manager, you are not powerless to this phenomenon.  Here are some steps you can take to triage the situation and stop the bleeding:

  1. Examine your organization’s culture and value proposition, then listen to what your employees are telling you about their experiences to make sure you are giving them what they need. This can be done through a culture and climate survey and by establishing focus groups.
  2. Develop your employees so that they understand their talents, gifts and strengths, this will enable them to find meaning and purpose in their work.
  3. Create a schedule that allows you to invest time to get to know your people as individuals, and understand their values and unique experiences in order to implement policies and programs that truly support their personal and professional growth.
  4. Encourage a culture of improvement and accountability for growth by regularly soliciting and responding to feedback, always checking and rewarding those who execute.

Remember, in today’s work culture, people want flexibility, autonomy, and ownership over their careers.  As you learn to champion your employees in this quest through your actions, words, and behaviors, they will be inspired and motivated to work on a winning team.  Additionally, your actions, words, and behaviors will be interpreted by external customers and diverse stakeholders as a winning formula, building trust and demand for your brand and business.
